That's right, there's a "Pictures of Mah Rig!" thread. There's the "Pedalboard Thread", the "Rate My Gear" thread, and even a "Pictures of Fancy Amps" thread.

But now, I present to you...

The "Pictures of your Gear In Action!" thread!

Post up some pictures of you playing your gear! Bedrooms, shows, massive gigs, whatever.

I'll kick it off...

EDIT: Yes, there was a thread on it before, but I didn't feel like bumping a 2+ year old thread

Heres a couple different shows we have played. I'm the one in the center with the First Act guitar and the Vox AC30. You can sort of see my pedalboard in some pics, although it is radically different now.

I mean, how many college kids can honestly say "Hey, I've been on national TV, on American Idol, met/hung out with/played in the backing band of Taylor Swift (who, call me gay, I really like), and still have time for college!"

You are my hero

Yeah, he's serious.

Colin played (plays? Dunno if he still does) in Taylor Swift's backing band.

It is working out EXTREMELY well. I'm a very "arrangement" oriented songwriter I guess, and most of the ideas the bassist and I had just don't work with two guitarists. We do lots of harmonization and 3 part verses. While each individual part might not be very hard, the result when you put them together can be really sweet. We are actually able to pull it off without running all over each other because we are all three VERY different players. Plus none of us really have any egos about our playing, so we are able to do it without everything getting overwhelming for the listener. IT DOES NOT WORK WITH MOST LINEUPS THOUGH. When we first tried it about 2 years ago we had a MUCH harder time making it work because the two other guitarists that used to play with us clashed on EVERYTHING and both had the players egos to think that they were too good to play in a three guitar context. One of them left and then the other left. The two other guys we have now are perfect for it. I wouldn't have it any other way

Wow. Poor guy being forced to listen and learn her songs.

Ouch. It may not be my ideal job but it beats the hell out of playing local dives for the cost of gas and free beer. In a perfect world, I would be writing the next "Stranger's Almanac" and hanging out with Jim James and Conor Oberst, but that hasn't quite happened yet.

I don't mean that as a personal attack on you. I want to make a living being a musician and this is the best way for me to do that, at the moment. Beggars can't be choosers. Maybe one day I will be an esteemed singer/songwriter...

Here's why working for a "soulless, corporate pop band" is a great career move:

I get to do what I love in front of 40,000+ people a night
get paid rather handsomely
travel the country
be on national television
my boss is not only attractive, but also a cool person to hangout with
having a national headliner on my resume is more impressive than some college band when working in Nashville/ the music industry

The perks aren't exactly bad. Also, her songs are at least catchy and bearable night after night (unlike some of the "music" that gets tossed around in the metal forum).

(dont flame. I totally love me some old school thrash like Megadeth, Exodus, and Testament and newer prog like Dream Theater, Porcupine Tree, and Mastodon.)

All I've got to say is to each his own. I could spend a lot of time typing out my disagreements with a lot of that, but it's really not worth my time to argue over the internet.

I'm pretty sure you're doing it wrong. You're not supposed to pay to play, you're offering a service and they should paying for a service.

I'm not trying to argue with you. To each his own.

What I was trying to say in my previous post is that this isn't a job to which one simply says "no, I would prefer to keep my artistic integrity". When I got the call last February, I was in my third year of college taking a pre-med course load. I was miserable and broke to say the least. Then I get a call from Taylor's tour manager saying that Grant Mickelson had recommended me to fill in for the summer dates. I was offered $1500/night for three months to play her songs. I had no money, would have loans to pay back in 18 months, and utterly miserable. I politely said **** yeah! Since doing that tour, I have been working on several projects (one of which is fairly high profile) and have a job waiting for me after college. This is not what I had in mind for a musical career, but that job opened more doors for me than making love to my ego in local bars while pretending that selling-out was equal tantamount to death ever could have.

BTW, I will still graduate in May with a degree in Biochemistry and a minor in music theory. However, med school is not in my immediate plans.

Thanks for the kind words guys. NOW LETS GET THIS THREAD BACK ON TOPIC!

Anyways. Gig from last night....

I'd be able to put up with her songs for that price. Now I understand.

How many nights a week do you work? Even if you worked 1 night a week for 3 months, that would still be $18,000.
