Probably a dumb question but what does it mean when your drums are triggered? Mostly referenced in metal

Triggered drums are normal acoustic drum sets set up with electronic pads, much like a normal drumset. You can control the volume. The biggest controversy about these drumsets is much of the time, there is no power control. No matter how hard or how soft you hit it, the drum sounds the same. In metal, these are often used on a double bass pedal to get a more consistent sound and many drummers consider this cheating.
