Lately, my amp has began to sound more muffled, like a cloth over the speakers. Could it be time for a new tube change?

Yes, that's happened to me before. New tubes fixed that instantly

It also makes a subtle "pop pop pop" sound.

I'm thinking of getting some JJ KT88's in the power amp. What about the preamps? Any suggestions?

are these 'pop' sounds from the pre's or the power's? (just curious)

Im pretty sure they are from the powers...
Since it only happens when you turn it up to a certain point...
I could be wrong

^huh?

He was asking Weeping Demon not you

He asked because you can get popping noises from either preamp or power amp tubes, but yes it sound like it is time for new power tubes.

Mullard EL34s is my vote or winged 'C's. Contact Doug at dougstubes.com. Great guy.

They are OK. The rumor is that their quality has dropped in the past year and do not have the life length they used to. That's all hear say though. Mullards are darker sounding, like JJs, and made a bit better. I have a similar amp and like the darker tone vs say Tung Sols or something.
