when it comes to finding band members.

I'm getting increasingly frustrated in finding other musicians around here who want to play what I do. And I'm probably the most open-minded guy when it comes to playing different styles of music, so that tells you how lame it is around here.

To keep this from being a blog, share your frustrations of trying to start a band...or just brag about how you don't have that problem at all so I can hate you.

There aren't many people around here who like my taste in music. And hell, I'm pretty open about it. As long as it's a bit challenging and has progressive influences.

I'm a bassist, and a drummer. I get invited to join another band every week (no exaggeration). Still, I am getting quite annoyed because none of them are serious about it AT ALL. Also, there's a band that I want to start up, but I can't think of anyone who would be interested in the style of music (think Placebo+Silversun Pickups+a dash of Senses Fail).

Yeah, well as far as I know there aren't too many musicians roaming around in my wife's pants

Serious answer now, be patient. It took me 3 years to get all the components of my last band together.

nobody in my country shares my taste in music AND is able to play it. All the bands that are being founded around me are shiz. and even if they were cool, I wouldn't be asked for them cause only few people know I play an instrument...

I have no problem finding players, even in the genres I want to play. it just seems that around here anybody who plays music spends most of their time getting stoned and trying to get laid. I have no problem with pot but it seems like it takes so much time away from jamming.

My bassist right now was tight with the band all summer, now all of a sudden he's banging like 4 ugly chicks, and he spends all of his time either getting money for weed, looking for weed, smoking weed, or talking about how he wants some weed. Now every time he comes to practice I feel like he's lagging behind on riffs, and we have 4 songs he doesn't even know! It's all part of the struggle man.

My major frustration is that I'm in a band with my friends from high school but we all have different tastes so nobody is on the same page and nothing gets done. I'm into classic and 90s rock, our singer/guitarist listens to nothing but hair metal (which I hate) and both my drummer and bassist play nothing but Rush. Both me and my singer/guitarist want to take being in a band more seriously and potentially play gigs and stuff for money and write originals and see where we can take it, but we can't agree on what our sound should be. He wants it more hair metal, I want it to be anything BUT hair metal. Now the drummer and the bassist don't really give a rats ass, they're only playing for fun and all they want to do is learn covers, mostly of Rush songs. Now, don't get me wrong, I like Rush, I really do. But these two are OBSESSED with them. They want to BE Geddy Lee and Niel Pert. They want ME to be Alex Lifeson. I don't want to be Alex Lifeson. I want to be me. On top of all that our drummer goes away to school so we only really get to see him during school breaks mostly in the winter and summer.

Honestly, if I was playing with anyone else I'd leave and find a new band with people with tastes more along mine but since we're all nearly done with college and living different lives from each other the only time we really get to hang out is once a week at band practice nights and even though I feel like my creativity is being stifled by the arguing and indecision, they're still my childhood friends and I still enjoy hanging out with them and this is really the only time we do spend together. On top of that, practices are at my house and if I left then the rest of them would have no place to play and I'd feel pretty guilty about that. That said I'm transferring out for my last year and a half of school and will be going away so I'm not sure what they're going to do but then again next fall my bassist will be going to law school and I'm fairly sure he'll be away for that too so I have no idea how we're going to work this out. We'd still be able to play over winter and summer breaks but god knows where that leaves us.

tl;dr playing in a band with childhood friends sucks when you cant agree on what to play.

The thing is, I've tried craigslist many times. I'll have an ad or 2 up all the time, and not too much luck so far. Found a drummer, but he ended up being a druggie.

It's easy to find people who play an instrument

It's very difficult to get 2 guitarists, a singer, a drummer, and a bassist together who all want to play the same type of music and have a close enough schedule to play and practice often. And with me, I like to have not just musicians, but friends to hang out with. Makes the music come out much more intimate, and we're doing it for fun, not to be "OMG we are rockstars!!!!"

all my band needs is a bassist. at this point i'm not even sure we do need a bassist. i mean we crank the bass on the guitar EQs so much that any more bass would cause internal bleeding.

Not all bands have bassists. I'm not saying bass isn't important, but you don't always have to go with the standard band roster.

I sort have the same problem; I know 2 or 3 other people that I have jammed with, but we can never really make it a regular thing.
#24
Yeah I got the same problem I have half of my band together but I still need the other half (I'm tryibg to form a 2 piece) and all they need to do is play drums and sing backup...
And of course have the same influences as me

i know plenty of people to jam with, it's just some of them are too busy to be in a serious band so it turns into a bunch of random jam sessions

My bandmates aren't quite on the same page as me in terms of playing style, but I've decided what the hell, I might as well play some radio-pop punk. They're my best *cough*only*cough* friends so it's cool.

Going to parties and not being a social recluse usually helps.

My band has two members(my guitarist and I) and we're doing weekly fycking auditions for a bassist, vocalist and rhythm guitarist, that's how much unrequited talent is hanging around here.

Long story short: Hate your tiny bumblefuck town for having 100 musicians for a population of 10, 000 and move to Toronto, where there are so many musicians, we're poorer than bums.

We need a singer and its hard to find one in our area, especially one that can sing, wants to sing for a band, or has the balls, and suits the band.

Also Getting practice together it was good and easy at first, but the Drummer and Rhythm guitarist coach basketball at our old school, the team has practices on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and everyonce an a while they have a game on tuesdays... leaving the Thursdays for weekday practice. Then Saturday and Sunday, often half the band has something planned on saturdays... and sundays are iffy... The worst is when they say at the last band practice they could make the next one... because we all figured out which day is best for all, but then they can make it... maybe because something came up... but the thing is its been probably like 10 sundays of something came up... I ono I just dont get it... I can make it to all the practices... theres only been one time when i didnt and it and it was with my old band the reason was because i had strepped throat and we had a show soon and I didnt want to give it to the singer.

About a week ago I was on my way home, Its was 5:00PM, band practice is normally at 5:30PM-6:00PM on weekdays, anyways a deer jumped in front of my car i swirved and slid on the icey road into the ditch (did about a 270* spin), derimmed a tire and another went flat. Pulled it out of the ditch with the help of my uncle, got home at about 5:40. Then got to practice at about 6:30PM.
The rhythm guitarist however could not make it... *sighs*

Sorry for rant...

But yah its difficult to get everyone at the same practices all together, and to find a singer...
