I play a PRS custom 24 with 57/08 pickups through a orange rockerverb head.

I LOVE the sound, the tone is killer.

Here is the problem - I want more of a tighter, metal tone. (think between the buried and me, master of puppets metallica, shadows fall).

It sounds almost to "fuzzy" and "british" for my liking. I play through master of puppets as my warm up routine and I feel like the tone is too warm and "fuzzy" lacks "tightness". It makes the riff sound sort of "muddled".

the tone when I play leads though, is absolutely killer, so I have not complaints about that.

Is there any way I can get more of a tighter, modern sound off of this baby? Either by changing my pickups or tweaking the amp (I think the 57/08 pickups may be the problem).

My friend has a old style mesa dual which has as killer modern rhytmn channel, but the lead and clean sounds are WAY better on the orange, so I am not willing to switch amps.

It is a fizzy amp

Have you tried a clean boost or OD pedal set to clean?

This...

Grab yourself something like a Digitech Bad Monkey or Boss SD-1. Crank the volume and keep the gain low or off. Adjust the gain on your amp to taste. Everything will tighten up and get punchier too.

I never tried "boosting" my amp before...

As luck would have it, I do have an extra bad monkey laying around.

So I should crank the volume on the bad monkey and set the gain to pretty much 0, then adjust the gain on my head?

Buy an BBE Sonic Maximizer.

Sonic Maximizer is a two band EQ that just boosts highs and lows and ended up making amps sound like swarms of pissed off bees.

You realize that the Ibanez Tubescreamers cut bass too, right...

Besides, if it cuts bass just turn the bass up on the amp.

Really? I always heard how mysterious the effect of the Sonic Maximizer was and how it's so magic and stuff. Funny if it's just a 2-band EQ
