I'm thinking about learning to play the guitar, but I'm a college student on a tight budget. How good of a guitar do I need if I'll probably buy a better one if I decide to continue playing? Does it really matter whether it's a Yamaha or Fender (or some other lesser brand), etc.? What are the *essential* things I should be looking for in a first guitar? If anyone knows, I would also appreciate descriptions of the major guitar teaching methods. Link

Essential things: Strings, neck, etc

Most important thing: You like it, whether it is 100 or 1000 dollars.
...In my opinion.

Get something half tidy but second hand. You'd be suprised what a few hours on Ebay at stupid o'clock in the morning and £150 (~$300) can get you. Also if you don't stick with it you'll probably make your money back or maybe even a small profit.

a "while" being a few years.

If you want an acoustic, just go ahead and get the starter kit that you linked to. A hundred bucks is a pretty good deal considering you don't want to put hundreds of dollars into a hobby that you don't even know if you'll like yet.

Yes I do. I've seen it on ten other forums besides this one. It doesn't make his win any less monumental.

i'd get an epiphone sg special or something. there like $170 i think and have humbuckers. i started on a squier affinity strat and while i did like it, i liked the epiphone much better. just make sure it feels good in your hands and you will enjoy playing it.

It's like jerking off to the same porn twice, or even more times.

So yes, yes it does.

How good you say? Why, just listen to the whispering of the trees and you'll know for certain.

Unless you're a maroon. Trees can't communicate with maroons.

You're not a maroon are you?

I started out on a low-end squire, and decided after 6 months that I loved playing. That's when I upgraded to a middle-range ibanez. Still rocking that thing two years later.

You need a guitar that has decent enough action so you don't struggle too much with it while learning and it needs to be able to stay in tune at least for awhile.
Moving on.....
