Righto, so, I was wondering, is it possible to run an amp head through studio monitors without using some kind of cabinet simulator pedal?

Unless you had a pair of studio moniters that had the right ohm rating, then no. And even if you did, the speakers would not produce a desirable tone.

It depends on the impedance and power handling of the (hopefully unpowered) monitors. But in general, no, it's a bad idea.

It won't sound good even if it does work.

use an attenuator or blow up the monitors or don't do it. those are your choices.

By attenuator you mean like a Hot Plate? Or a cabinet simulator pedal thingy?

yeah a hot plate is an attenuator that is very common, and is one of the cheaper ones widely available

How would that work? I was under the impression that an attenuator was used so that you could overdrive the power amp tubes without making the amp too loud
