I play it like this:
U U D U U D U U D U U D etc.

is that the best picking to use with this riff? I think the tempo is 170

That's how I'd play it. Whether that's considered the "best" way to pick it is up to you. Play it however way you feel is comfortable and gives the best sound.

C'mon, man. We're just kidding. We all know that drummers are important.

After all, without drummers, who would bag my groceries?

I don't know if I should be switching on alternate and economy, though. I play some riffs economy picked and others alternate picked. Does it matter if I just do the one most comfortable or should I stick to one?

If you're going for economy picking, I think it would be like this. 90% sure
U U D D U D D U D D U D

I alternate pick almost everything. This is no exception.

Junior's usually at least a little terse, but he knows his stuff. I've always read his posts in a grouchy grandfather voice, a grouchy grandfather with a huge stiffy for alternate picking.
Besides that, he's right this time. As usual.

I'd say that's bass ackwards picking.

Honestly, I might just alternate pick that with each triplet reversed from the previous one. I can't see much benefit to sweeping/hybrid picking there. But if I was going to sweep, I'd turn it around from how you had it and do DUD DUD so that the beat was always on a downstroke.

Do whatever sounds the best.

This is one of those things that beginner/intermediate players get all excited about that don't really matter at all.
