Brokencyde

Edit: Seriously though, it'll be pretty hard to pinpoint an exact definition for heavy metal. It's not Brokencyde, though.

It's an umbrella term that could be used to describe metal in general. However, it's usually used in a way to describe some of the earlier metal bands like Black Sabbath, or Dio

heavy metal is a sub genre of metal (i believe), if you mean metal in general then thats too broad of a genre.

I could care less, to me the only sub genera's of metal are Thrash metal, death metal, progressive metal, groove metal, and this shit called black metal.

Heavy metal is anything heavy, hence the word heavy.

Then why don't you?

I dare you

Iron Maiden is probably the epitome of what I would label "Heavy Metal". You can stick NWOB in front of that if you want, I don't care.

A7X and Green Day are my fave metal bands.

I believe your sarcasm detector could possibly be malfunctioning. It's probably one of those cheap models made by foreign laborers who are paid slave wages, so it's not your fault.

Oh wait, yes it is.

i think Kick The Chair by Megadeth is a pretty good example of Heavy Metal (but then again im pretty biased towards Megadeth :P ) or Painkiller by Judas Priest
#24
Heavy metal to me is the earliest example of true metal. Black Sabbath is the best example I can think of, Dio and some Zeppelin come to mind also.

Heavy metal is the best music every. But you cant really define it. Its such a broad range of music. Everything from Black Sabbath to Nile is heavy metal.
#35
Heavy Metal is a sub-genre of Metal now?

What genre of Metal isn't heavy?

Even still, "Heavy Metal" and "Metal" are pretty much the same thing. Metal didn't come about before heavy metal and heavy metal is in no way a sub-genre of metal.

Also: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heavy_metal_music

So there. This thread is really, really dumb.

I agree, and stand by my post on the first page. But people can be really ignorant on the subject. And even after this thread, I doubt TS will know an answer.

In my opinion sometimes 'heavy' doesn't really mean loud, distorted or fast as much as it means it has some feeling as if something huge and dangerous is lurking beneath an eerily-calm facade. That's the feeling I always get from ambient BM.

Well, his question is pretty stupid. (no offense)

I'm quite certain that the TS is thinking of some sub-genre of metal and labeling it as Heavy Metal.
