Ok, so I just got in a Behringer VD1 pedal, which is basically a Big Muff Pi clone.

I also have a Digitech RP-255 multi-effects modeling pedal, which has a Big Muff Pi preset.

What I did was connect both to my computer, and then record the sounds made by each using Audacity. I played the same three notes. The RP-255 has all other effects disabled other than the Muff preset. Basically all you are hearing is the pedal (or effect). I did not use any cabinet modeling or anything.

I have posted links to 3 files. 2 are of one of the pedals, 1 is of the other. The (gain, sustain,or tone of the pedal) were tweaked on one of the recordings, to make it a bit more difficult.

Here they are, compressed with LAME -alt preset standard:

Please excuse the shitty playing

EDIT: after everyone posts some responses, I will post the real results.

My money is on 2&4 being the behringer, and 3 being the digitech.

I'd rather than a comparison with a real Big Muff Pi rather than a "clone".
Just saying.

I know it would be better to have a real Big Muff, but this is all I have.

I know three chords isn't a lot, but I have only been playing the guitar for less than 4 months and I am not very good yet

Basically think of it as a comparison between a true analog distortion circuit, versus a digitally modeled one.

If someone wants to send me a wave or flac file of some virtuoso playing (without effects) I can output the signal into the boxes and then record them that way.

The Valveking is not being used for the test.

They are all going to sound kind of gross. The reason is because the raw pedal (or modeler) output is fed from the usb digital interface on the Digitech into my computer to record.

There is no guitar amp or cabinet being used.

At least guess which one is which. I never claimed it was a scientific experiment or anything.

I took apart the Behringer, it looks like the circuit is very similar to the big muff if not identical. The only difference being the Behringer design is minaturized, using small surface mount components.
