UPDATE: It's fixed, it was a surround sound setting on the head unit.

At a stand still trying to install my wifes Christmas present. Installing a dvd headunit capable of surround sound. I'm using the preamp out puts instead of the stereo amp to my speakers. The pioneer amp I'm using only has one input. So I'll be sacrificing my front to rear fading ability. I don't give a shit.

I'm using the front rca output to the amp. I should have an insane amount of volume, but I don't. It's very low. Sub works, the rear dvd works, the amp is obviously on...

Also, I'm using the rear rca out put to the self powered subwoofer which has very low volume also....

Why the low volume? I am replacing an existing dvd headunit that quit loading dvds. The volume was fine on that.

I don't get it.

Alright fine. I'll help you.

Ok, first get your super-glue and glue it to the drivers seat (or the passengers seat if she cannot drive/ you want to drive, unless you swing that way, i'm not here to judge. Seriously dude, I'm fine with it! Although I wouldn't do that myself. Fine, I think you're sick.) Anyway, glue it to the seat, and make sure it's the right way up, and be sure to install batteries or else it won't work.

You're trying to drive speakers with a pre-amp output? That's what you typed but I don't think that's what you meant. If it is that's your problem.

Does the DVD player have a volume control in the menu? If so is it turned down? Gotta start with the obvious man.

All sources have the same low level of volume. DVD, CD, FM... Since I am only using a front left/right speaker setup, the head unit lets me disable center, and rear left/right. Didn't help. I adjust the gain control on the head unit but thats only for the built in amp.

Try unplugging your RCA inputs one at a time. You may have a shorted cable.

No difference. Any other cables that could be shorted?
#22
I think I'd try Nigels suggestion. Get it back to where it's working and then try again. You could check your speaker outputs real quick and make sure they aren't shorted.

Head unit:

Amp: This is not powering the subwoofer.

Subwoofer.

I want to make a drink, but this sort of thing shouldn't be done drunk...

EDIT: Just to clarify, I do have sound. It just isn't very loud. The gain is up all the way on the amp, and I even get a slight bit of distortion.

And all of this equipment was already installed when we bought Jeep. I'm just replacing the head unit...

Switch your outputs on the JVC from the front to the rear output going to the Pioneer. And open a beer.

I did try that but it didn't work...

However, I figured it out. I turned off the surround sound setting which I thought I did. The volume was up to 50 max when I turned it off... I shit a squirrel. I'm opening a beer now. Thank you sir!

Try connecting the red and the blue cable.

If it did not explode, you were doing it right.

EDIT: ARGH! You fixed it? :/ Ah well, cheers. Merry christmas and good luck with getting your surround stereo in her Jeep.
