Since the VK212 doesn't start sounding good on the lead channel until it gets to a volume above 1, is there a cheap way to add a master volume control?

yes, ibanezpsycho, a guy on this forum, used to do this with his VK head. you put a volume pedal or anything that can reduce your volume in the FX loop and that way you can crank the volume up and keep down the master using the volume pedal

Head and Cab for $130? You don't need a head and cabinet, you need a psychological examination.

Yeah, you can do the same as the post above me with a 10 band mxr eq too.
Or you can mod it to have a master volume knob but that's gonna take alot of technical knowledge
