I know this doesn't concern most of you, but I think it might lead to an interesting discussion. I'm in Israel, in case you didn't notice my location.
Recently there was a legal law passed that states that alcohol cannot be sold after 23:00, until 7:00 and without a permit, or advertised in the media (TV, Newspapers etc.), which I think is pretty smart, if somewhat bad for pubs and bars.
A different law is currently being discussed, raising the legal drinking age to 21 (it's currently 18). I think that's preposterous. People are "allowed" (read as legally obliged) to go and die in the army at 18, but not to drink? And what are we, the U.S? I know the U.S is our closest ally, but we don't have to do everything they do (legally, we're actually closer to the U.K)...
#2
That's ridiculous. The drinking age should be 32.

Ah, Kensai, you and your antics...
Look at it this way, people in the army tend to be mature, and when they get off in the weekend, don't they need some form of release?

People drink no matter what thier age, Zakk Wylde claims to have started when he was 14. Legal or not, no one really pays attention.

EDIT: Though I must say that is a good point. Soldiers should have atleast one legal drink before they die.

Drunk on their time off, so your argument is invalid.

I agree with you. I'm probably wrong when I say this next part though because I don't know where I heard it but isn't there something about your body being more developed and better at taking in all that alcohol by the time your 21? Either way, 18 drinking age is good.

Btw, I'm pretty sure some states here in the US have an 18 drinking age.

BTW, a ban on advertising for tobacco products in the UK actually made them more profitable.

Most supermarkets here in the UK can't sell alcohol until after 10am or after 11pm due to licensing laws. 24 hour licensing has only really come about here in the last few years too.

I like the idea of not advertising in the media, a bid to cut underage drinking? After all, adverts make it look all cool to be drinking and I think it opens up the opportunity for marketing to become a bit more creative than sticking on an ad with lots of adults drinking, smiling and laughing. Also, they'll save shit loads on advertising fees.

Drinking age to 21? Well then you just have more underage drinking. If you become an adult then you should be allowed to drink at 18 too.

I don't really care what the drinking age is, I can get it easily enough if I want it. And the fact I'm 18 soon anyway.

The 21 law in US states is stupid though.

i live in america. legal drinking age is 21. now, in my younger years, i would argue that the legal drinking age should be 18 here. i mean, old enough to serve, old enough to drink, right? but now that im 21 and actually CAN buy alcohol on my own, i couldnt care any less.

Actually, it's not propaganda. Your own military admitted to doing it.

And, whether soldiers have guns or not, they're usually trouble makers. And, IDF are trained with the most dangerous martial arts in the world. How would the lack of a gun matter?

Soldiers are known for being pretty bad when out on the town.

Actually, the soldiers don't cause any trouble, and remember that they only have a limited time to drink in, so the won't get completely drunk. Give me a link about the organ-theft propaganda, and I just might believe you.

Oh, come on. That's bollocks, and you know it. Soldiers are known trouble makers. They're people specifically trained to solve their problems with violence. Their hands are lethal weapons. Alcohol gives lessened judgement and in some much higher levels of aggression.

Do you not see where that is heading?
I agree that 18 is just right for the drinking age, but the soldier argument is not helping you one bit, sorry.

if anything, this would make them more drunk, they aren't going to think "oh no, I don't have long so I can't drink much", they'll be thinking "I need to drink as much as possible in the time I have", which means they are drinking loads in a short space of time, making them much more drunk.

edit: I do agree that 18 is a sensible age to have the law at though. It doesn't really make any difference anyway though, it's not exactly difficult to get alcohol underage, and never will be.

Here you go.

I haven't heard of a single case of violent outbursts involving soldiers, and no one over 18 touches minors. It's the under-age drinkers that cause trouble.

Hands as lethal weapons? Sounds like a cheesy Kung-Fu film to me... And how could they drink enough to get that drunk if they have until 11PM? Drinking starts at 10PM, or 9 in some places, but rarely, and adults usually drink in bars, where fighting doesn't really happen (no bar brawls here...). There's also military police in town, so soldiers would be on the look-out. No one messes with soldiers, out of respect and fear.

Well, organ-theft is slightly stretching it... Taking organs from dead bodies (they didn't kill them for that) is hardly theft...

There is something inherently wrong about harvesting organs without explicit consent of either the deceased or their next of kin. It's rather creepy, at best.

You need to use google, in that case.
There are plenty of examples.

... Are you joking? You do know what Krav Maga is, right?
2 hours shotting vodka/tequila? That'll get you pretty damn drunk.
No, but soldiers aren't exactly known for not messing with other people.

...
What's the definition of theft?
–noun
1. the act of stealing; the wrongful taking and carrying away of the personal goods or property of another; larceny.
What're they doing? Oh yeah, taking the organs of people who don't want them to be taken away.
Not organ theft at all.

And, that's the official IDF version. Which is always understated. Lords knows what they really did.
