Hey all, maybe a dumb question here but I'll give it a shot. So I've been playin around with tuning up on my acoustic, I especially like D,A,D,A,D,D but I've been breaking the B string alot, for obvious reasons. So my question is: Is there a brand, guage or type of string that is built to handle or is able to better cope with the increased tension? Another possibly silly question: Am I at any risk of damaging my guitar with the higher string tension? I've heard about a 1 step up limit and my B string is up 1 and a half steps. I'm using an Epiphone PR-5E if that makes any difference. Thanks very much for any help.

What Gauge are you using now? Ideally lighter gauges would be better for higher string tensions (higher tunings). I've gone up to D on my B string before when using 12s (I dislike the nervous feeling i get while doing it though). I think that if you had .10s then you shouldn't have to worry about it as much. I'm not sure though. I'm sure someone here with more luthier-type knowledge could tell you more.

the only gauge i'd risk my guitar tuning up would be extra lights, which are 10s, and even then you can harm your guitar.

have you tried nashville tuning? d'addario makes 'em special and all but one string are tuned an octave higher than normal. they're basically the high strings from a 12 string but without the regular strings. you can hear 'em here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mqDCuFCbGQ0 and see the strings here http://store.daddario.com/category/144856/EJ38H_High_StrungNashville_Tuning_10-27

I've never seen that before. I think I'll have to restring my guitar like that sometime and try it out.
