So I accidentally came across a little trick that I thought is cool. I have a MIM strat with an HSS setup. It's got a 5 way pickup selector and if you put the selector between 2 positions you get a bit of both sounds.

For example I usually put it in between positions 4 and 5. Position 5 is the humbucker (bridge position) and position 4 Is humbucker+middle pickup. What is it exactly doing in between these 2 positions? Because position 4 is basically the "mix" of both middle and bridge, so how does this really work?

I turns both pickups on. So your getting signal from the middle and bridge pickups (if you have it in position 4)

It's not really a trick, since it was put onto strats originally anyways.

The middle pickup on strats is reversed wound. On SSS setup, the 2 and 4 positions would give more of a humbucking type sound. Not fully, but it was mainly used to eliminate the hum caused by single coils. From what I know, if the bridge position has a humbucker already (HSS setup) then the bridge+middle position gives a somewhat coil split sound.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

Fender added positions 2 & 4 because players were doing that with the original 3-position selectors.

Eah, but now you can put it in between positions 4 and 5, or in between 1 and 2, etc. It's not one of the 5 positions.

I mean, if position 4 already activates bridge and middle pickups, and 5 activates bridge, then how are these two combined? It gives a strange but cool tone. Try it if you have a stratocaster

chances are you're just getting the middle single coil cutting in and out, since the switch isn't properly set.
