So of my friends since like 6th grade, and me decided to form a band, well, eventually we started talkin about it, I got a drummer, and I decided I would sing and play guitar. I started talking to his cousin and he joined in on it, and since his cousin and me are way better than my friend I knew since 6th grade, I dont think i'll need him. How do I tell him I dont need it without making me seem like such a bad friend?

Change the band's myspace password and delete him from the friends.

Oh yeah, that's just what douchebags do.

(Wasn't me who got deleted, but I know the guys who did because they just didn't have the balls to tell him he was out)

Next time he walks into the room, run up and grab his balls, then tell him that he is no longer needed and that if he fights you on the decision you will rip them off.

Whatever you do, just say it to him in person, a text, or an email is by far the worst thin you could do and may drive him to kill you in your sleep. But since you took the coward way, then you deserve it.

Just tell it to him directly, if you are good friends he will understand.

I don't think there is a way. The reason you're wanting your friend out of the band is because you've decided he isn't good enough and the people you assembled later can cover everything.

You knew how good he was (or wasn't) when you started this. He was good enough for you then, but now you're changing the rules to suit you. Bad enough to do something like this to just someone you don't know at all. But to do it to a friend is even worse. Poor personnel management on your part in either case. As far as friends go, this is bad. You seem like a bad friend from here. I imagine it will seem the same to your friend.

Serious answer: You have a drummer and three guitarists, correct? Have your friend take up bass. Problem solved. And if he already plays guitar, he can probably play some simple bass parts already.

In the future, don't get a third guitarist. I don't need everyone screaming Iron Maiden at this point. The pure truth is that 99.9% of the time, a third guitarist is useless.
And no, Guitar Hero will not help. Even on expert. Really.

Manny,

In the 60's Randy Bachman (from Bachman Turner Overdrive) was showing his friend some guitar chords and his friend just couldn't pick them up. He started his band without him. Although Bachman gave up on his friend, his friend didn't give up on himself. A year later his buddy, Neil Young, sent Bachman the first copy of his first album with his band Buffalo Springfield.

Part of being an musician is teaching others your craft.

Ask yourself this: can you help your friend or is it easier to just give up on him and move on.

Rock on, Brother.

Did you post this in the pit first or something?

If you want him out of the band then just tell it to him straight. Don't hide from it and don't lie about why just take the time to explain the situation to him. He'll probably be annoyed anyway but there will be more of a chance for you still being friends this way.

Asking him to play bass is also a good idea though, seeing as most bands have a lot of trouble finding a bass player.
