1. so i really really suck at key changes.. every time i attempt them it sounds horrible. any advice on incorporating like harmonic minor, diminished, chromatics, augmented, or just normal major/minor key changes to give it a different sound? and make it sound good? i know it normally has to do with what the chords are but i like me some metal! so im talking more of like riffs and such.

2.also i think my ear is shhhittt (after 3 and some change years of decent practice with the exception of the last year like wtf?!?! ) because i find it hard to bring out the individual tonalities of each mode in key. i can "get" the sound but i cant seem to make a song/riff/melody from it. moods. i need to learn to emphasize them more i know what sound certain modes are supposed to have but it never seems to work for me. AND!!!it kinda takes my awhile to play stuff by ear sometimes to and sometimes its not right??!? ugh do i just suck? i feel like i've had plenty of practice to be at least ok... super ugh!!

3. i need different ideas cuz i use the same licks alot. i know i should listen to different music but i have a certain preference in guitar stuff so its hard.. suggestions?

EDIT: sorry if this is repetitive/ been asked before/ or whatever else i might have done wrong.

Start with easy key changes like going to a relative major or minor. All you really have to do is set up the resolution to the new key.

When using modes, use vamps. The vamps should be made out of chords that accentuate the unique intervals of the said mode.

Train your ear. It's that simple. Here's a good site for learning songs by ear: http://www.justinguitar.com/en/TR-000-Transcribing.php

Here are a couple ear-training sites:

Steal some licks from your favorite guitarists and incorporate them in to your playing. Learn what they do with them.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Key_change has some decent information.
Just start out with some basic modulation, to relative or parallel keys and dominant or subdominant keys.

For example, you could write a simple progression in a minor key, finish with a picardy third (major chord on the tonic), then start of a new phrase/section in the subdominant key.
