Is it really a big difference between cheap and expensive tubes? And what brand of tubes are the best price/quality?

Good tubes definately make a difference. This site has all the information you need...

http://www.eurotubes.com/
PRS SAS or Gibson LP Standard+
Teese WOF->Analogman Sunlion->Dr. Scientist Elements->Foxrox Aquavibe->Strymon Timeline->Eventide Space
Mesa RoadKing II and 2 Vox AC15s run in stereo

Tubes are basically all made in the same couple factories, so the only real difference in brands are the testing they provide. So you're not getting better tubes because you bought the brand, you're getting better tubes because the brand picked them better.

Hm, okay, so, maybe you could recommend a good price/quality EL34? Thanx

good luck. most new EL84 are very shoddy these days. i recommend just going ahead and find some NOS tubes.

JJ Teslas are pretty good in the middle range of price. If you want the double salmon burger of EL34s, though, it has to be Svetlana Winged C. FANTASTIC tubes.

I plan on getting a set of them as soon as my JJs start dying.
Everyone is entitled to an opinion.

Feel free to express yours so I can make an informed judgement about how stupid you are.

Amps are generally designed for a certain tube, which is often no longer made... but SED winged C's are about as good as can be bought....
