Look used first off, you'll get much better bang for your buck.

The VK stock is pretty meh, imo. Their is some who will tell you after a new speaker, tubes, and some other mods the amp will be really good for the price. Haven't heard one modded though.

What genres do you play?

Are you gigging/practicing with band?

right Metallica is a given. Personally I like to pretend the bus exploded and killed them all in '86.

First you put your pants on your head.
Second you dance.
Third you wipe off all the pussy.

Try something from bugera. I recommend the V22, stock i think it sounds fine, but you can always tweak it with a speaker change and tube swap. It has a good amount of gain on it , but you can always use a pedal for metal tones.

but definitely check Craigslist for cheaper used amps

A used VK is $250. If you get one for that, you can change the speaker and OT and you're half way to a great amp. You can often find a used VK with a swapped speaker and new tubes already too.
