They named Matt Bellamy as the guitarist of the decade, which I wholeheartedly agree with.

I dont have the magazine to hand, so I'll elaborate on it later, but do you think this is a good choice, and if not, who should be named as the guitarist of the decade?

Obviously J Mascis should be #1. Just sayin'

i'm gonna agree with this. J. Mascis has always been better than Bellamy
#23
he's a less than average guitarist, his composition for actual songs is what is good. He's one of my least favorite guitarists of the decade as far as his playing goes.

He's way better at piano than guitar. IMO it should be Guthrie Govan or Paul Waggoner.

Matt Bellamy has done more for the guitar this decade than any cookie-cutter shredder. There isn't anyone like him and no-one can follow up what he's done, so I agree.

Brought guitar music back to the mainstream, and pioneered with his use of effects.

I think they're about right. He's a popular guitarist, who isn't shit, and has their fame centred around the 00's.

We're not talking about Tom Morello here.

And when was guitar music out of the mainstream? It's pretty much been in focus since 40's or earlier.

asif. i hate matt bellamy more than anyone else in rock. he's a whiney bastard with no soul or passion.
i also think there are plenty of other more talented, inovative and influential guitarists from the last decade

Then you're a retard.

Matt Bellamy wholeheartedly deserves this award.

The problem here is that I've asked a simple question and rather than answer it you've named some of his songs ....

How has Matt Bellamy brought guitar based music back into the mainstream?

Presuming he means having popular good songs like the ones mentioned (and many more which are better) guitar playing didn't have to be super heavy to be complex and interesting, which is the view on which is my answer to your question

nowhere near the most talented, but interesting use of effects (kaos pad, built in fuzz factory, etc) and different sounding guitar sounds, with some great riffs

He's my guitarist of the decade by miles

Jeff Loomis, Gus G, Michael Ammot, Luke Hoskin, and Tim Millar are all dozens of times better than Bellamy, damn it.
