more of a boost than a fuzz. gives a bit of a fuzz effect, but its weak.

used is the best way to go man.
stay lit

Will preamp tubes turn black and melt slightly undernormal conditions and still work?

What specific fuzz tones do you have in mind? The Danelectro French Toast has a decent octave fuzz mode and sounds similar to a Black Russian Big Muff when the octave mode is disengaged. A DOD FX52 Classic Fuzz would be a cheaper alternative to a Big Muff and, possibly, more affordable than a Danelectro Cool Cat Fuzz, Behringer VD1, or Behringer Super Fuzz.
