Let me explain...

The past couple months my laptop has been crashing on me. It'll say a USB device has stopped working but I don't have any USB plugged into it. Then my computer screen will go blue, and there's a bunch of tiny writing I can't read. When I restart my computer, it says that my webcam (it's built in) is what made my computer crashed, and then links me to some site where I could update it, but that site is crud because it's only for webcams that you plug into your computer. I then searched a little and I should update the driver, so I put that off, and then I get a popup that asks if I want to update the driver for my webcam I think "Oh good!" then after running the program, it says it can't do it for some stupid reason I forget.

So this went on for months, and then a couple days ago, I got home, turned on my computer, and it crashed on me, and when the screen was blue, it froze there, so I held down the power button, and shut down my computer. Then when I went to start it up, it took me to the regular black screen asking if I wanted to launch a repair, or start my laptop normally. I clicked on repair, but it brought me back to the same black screen, so I tried starting it normally, but my computer shutdown and brought me back to the same screen.

So what's wrong with my computer, and what can I do to fix it? I'm not very good at all with computers.

Thanks for any help!

Using the family computer.

Similar problem here. Whenever my webcam started working (initiating a webchat), my computer crashed with a blue screen which flashed so fast I couldn't read it. It was a very old webcam, so I just got a new one for $20 and no problems since.

Yeah I figured, I just wanted to be first and I couldn't think of anything helpful or clever.

if you dont care about your files reinstall the os, if that isnt the problem take out your ram cards if you have more than 1 and try them 1 at a time, you may have bad ram, if thats not the problem you most likely have a hardware problem take it to a shop if its fairly new if not scrap it and buy another computer laptops are fairly cheap now, if your american check out newegg if your canadian check out tigerdirect if your not either of those than ask around it wont be hard to find another site.

Your power settings must've messed up and/or overdone itself.
Your best bet is to wait it out and keep trying to turn on your computer and it'll fix itself in a few weeks or wipe your harddrive completely.
If you're going to wipe your harddrive, you're going to need the reinstallation CD that came with your computer. If you bought it second hand, it most likely won't have one.

Then you'll have to resort to illegal methods.

Do you have the reinstallation cd?

No. I bought it second hand. =/

If you're not too tech savvy then you're better off paying someone else to fix it.

That's ALWAYS a bad idea.
Future lesson: If you can't afford a new factory computer, save up. It won't fuck you up so bad in the long run.

Are you familiar with .iso format? and do you have a CD burner + blank CD handy?

Also, what are your laptop specs?

I am not familiar with .iso format, only heard of it. CD burner yes, blank CD, yes I think the discs I have will work.

Okay, just tell me your laptop specs (Ie. how many megabytes/gigabytes of ram, your gigahertz (GHz) and What kind of processor you have ((pentium IV, Dual Core etc.)))

I'll give you a quick lesson on .iso format and then we'll take this to PM.

I don't know the specs at all. I believe it has a pentium processor (going from memory of the sticker on it)

Go on my computer, right click the properties and give Seth Shadows the info from there.

Also, NEVER buy second hand PCs, thats a big NO

Unless you want to retrieve previous owners credit details xD

I don't know what BSOD is...
#24
If it's not vista and your computer has a built-in recovery installer, hold some F-button on startup, often stated on screen for recovery...win
#25
If you can get to safe mode, run it. Go to start and do a chkdsk(start/run/chkdsk). If it is vista, then it might be the crcdsk.sys issue. Chkdsk with power defrag fixes basic errors like what you are describing.

If all else fails, go with a complete recovery. Either buy or "get" for a recovery disk for the OS you need and set up a a self booting flashdrive or self booting CD for it.

You have to update the drivers for your webcam. Often, bad drivers for a device will cause your windows to give you BSOD (blue screen of death).

trust me, i struggled with such problems for years before i switched to a Macbook Pro a few months ago.

It could be anything from a corrupted security update to smart-spyware deleting a certain startup item to even static electricity getting inside the laptop and frying the sensitive ram/motherboard.

I think you should just take it to a shop and have them take all your personal data off it and put it on a disc and then wipe the hard drive.

Yeah. It's a Acer Aspire 5610Z. Found the sepcs online.

Processor: Intel T2060 Pentium Dual Core
Chipset: Intel 943ML
Memory: 512MB / Max 4GB / Tested with 2GB (533Mhz PC4200 only)
Disc Storage: 80GB

The previous owner said she had it for 2 years, and I've had it for almost a year.

* Take 1 Rare-earth magnet and rub it all over yourself,
* Get some vegetable oil and rub it all over your laptop,
* Then get a big hammer and crack that baby open,
* Shove Rare-earth magnet in the case,
* enjoy a wiped HD,
* Scream at the fact that by following these instructions, you have now also got a useless laptop.
* Enjoy how you are now magnetic, and attempt to magnetize women for fun.

OR, get a windows CD and re-install, it'll pretty much guarantee that any virus will be destroyed.

And if that doesn't work, a technician should be able to fix it.

You can always pull the hard drive out and replace it. Stick the old hard drive in an external hard drive case and plug it in when you get Windows reloaded on the machine. You'll probably be able to recover all your music. Maybe.

Maybe I should look into do that. The music isn't really so important to me because I can get that all again, but it's more me being able to go online in privacy instead of my brother asking me about what I'm doing and who I'm talking to.

Computer questions make sense because quantum physics is probably something most users on here don't know about, so people wouldn't ask that kinda of a question. While a computer question makes sense because computers are common in life today that people know something about them, and therefore people can help people with that type of question.

Well people here all drive cars, so why not talk about transmissions and brake calipers and stuff like that? I'm just making a stupid point. Haven't I made it quite clear that I don't know crap?

You're right, it is a very stupid point. This is The Pit. You know, the area for general discussion? Contrary to popular belief, The Pit is not just here for wanna/b/'s.

As for TS, I've had similar problems before. Run Vista's Memory Diagnostic. You should be able to access it by hitting one of the F buttons on startup (I think it's F8, but I'm not sure.)

If that doesn't work, there's a few other Vista tools in that same area you can try. However, the Memory Diagnostic is what fixed up my computer.
