Do you think that the extra string means extra talent?
R.I.P. Ronnie James Dio. Supplied amazing music to both me and my mother.

He will be missed.

Extra strings means extra strings, that's it.

Of course it does. Just like having an amp that goes to eleven makes you louder.

No. 7 stringers have a thinned neck and wider radius anyways. Not really my thing. Doesn't mean I'm any less talented.

The third wheel is what makes it a tricycle.

No, but getting used to those kinds of necks can make playing 6-strings a lot easier than you would once think.

If you play a wide D-neck guitar it's not going to do anything for you.
#15
TS you go far to deep with this stuff.

People who can play a 6 string can usually adapt to a 7 string within a day.

It's just odd, but it doesn't feel all that different.

Besides, the extra string is just a tiny little variable in overall guitarplaying.

There are 100's of different skill levels on a 6 string already.

Quote by Symphony21
If you have another string you're going to have to learn all of your scales and chords on it.. so it may make you more knowledgeable, but more talented? I don't think so.

There's a very easy go-around for this, and that's just to take the octave shape in ur mind of a scale, and think of that with the higher octave being on the A string.

Then you just have to use that as a guide for the B string notes of the scale.

Very easy.

And you can still play your regular 6 string chords.

Sure you now have more options, but there are loads of people who play 7 string guitar and can play an extra few shapes, but can't play for example 3 inversions of a m7th chord on a 6 string.

It's just a little variable that does not explicitly state ur skill level.

Seriously though, no. You aren't better just because of an extra string.

I find my 7 string easier to play. So I guess no.

^ basically the kinda thing i had in mind.

but assumably, if more strings = more skill, then more wheels = more skill

so mr bean is more skilled than say matt hoffman or a GP motorcross rider.

Did you seriously think that playing a 7-string guitar makes you 14.3% better than someone who plays a six-string?

Also, wouldn't that mean that your objective skill level would diminish if you were to play a 6 string guitar?

I've seen that guitar so many times, but how anyone plays it perplexes me.
#34
Of course it doesn't. It may make your playing more economical due to having more available notes per position, but it won't make you a better player unless you work at being a better player. If you can play a 6 string, you can play a 7 string and vice versa. It's simply mental blocks people give themselves, perceiving more strings as harder. Bollocks to that. Sure, you may have to adapt your technique a bit, but adapting does not mean overall improving.

I think 12 string is harder to play than 6 string.
