i'm interested in doing some compete compositions with drums, bass and guitar, but i don't have a bass.

i was wondering if anyone knew of some software that would allow me to take bass lines recorded by a guitar and drop it an octave and use it as a proper bass line?

It won't sound much like a bass, it will just sound like a guitar being played an octave lower - basses have thicker strings which make the timbre of the instrument completely different. You would probably get better results if you sequence it.
