Hello there Pit,

In an attempt to discover new music and especially ways to use samples and beats I've decided to broaden my horizon more and listen to some hiphop. Problem is that I'm a total noob at this genre, and since there's quite a lot out there (including generic stuff that won't help) I'm lost at what to listen to. A friend of mine recommended Illmatic by Nas, which was indeed a solid album with a lot of variety on it.

So if you guys have any ideas on what more to listen to please post em, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Yeah, Illmatic is a great album.

Have a listen to some Busta Rhymes. His style has got quite mainstream lately but the older stuff is absolutely class.

I'm only going to suggest one artist because otherwise I'll get carried away and give you a massive list of rap.

Deltron 3030 - It's Del the Funky Homosapien with Dan the Automator. Post-apocalyptic hip hop from the future...
#9
Mos Def - Black on Both Sides
Little Brother - The Minstrel Show

And I second Busta Rhymes. He's the shit.

Immortal Technique, Jedi Mind Tricks, Eminem (a lot of his stuff is actually well written), and as said before, Nas, and Deltron 3030.

Paul's Boutique by Beastie Boys is a great album. I'd also recommend pretty much anything by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious 5.

Don't be so quick to shun mainstream rap though.

Lil Wayne- The Carter II
The Game- LAX
Eminem- The Slim Shady LP

If you don't like it, fine. But you should at least give everything a chance.
Chinese Democracy is a great album, people need to get over Slash.

Proud fan of Pop, Rap, Rock, and Metal.
