I've been teaching myself to play guitar for a little over a year now, and have unfortunately been teaching myself wrong. My initial picking technique is fine, using the wrist. I have a bad habit of tensing my forearm as I increase speed. Is there something I can do to work on this, because trying to increase speed with the wrist feels awkward at times even though its something I need to do.

well besides relaxing your wrist and practicing the only other advice i could give is to not strain your self

Slow down, be patient, stop trying to play too fast before you're good enough to do so.
