Hey I got my brothers Mac for Christmas, it's an '08 plain Macbook. I've been recording my acoustic guitar on its built in mic on Garage Band. My brother got me a little converter thing that makes a 1/4" plug into a 1/8" plug. There is a 1/8" jack in the side of the Mac. Can I use the converter plug to record my electric guitar recordings?

You can, but it probably won't sound all that great. I don't have any experience with Macs for recording, but I know on my Gateway laptop, there's a bit of hiss when you go right into the line in jack with the 1/4" - 1/8" adapter.

Yeah, it works, but it's not gonna sound awesome. Give it a shot and see what you think, but it's generally not going to produce a quality sound. A cheap interface will get you miles ahead of that quite easily. Check out the Line 6 UX1 for that kind of thing!
