I'm doing a report for English on metal and it's effects on people, etc. I need to clarify how songs are dubbed metal, and i want to show some riffs from songs that make it very clear to as what metal songs are like.

So, what are your top 3 metal songs/riff?

I dont have a top 3 but if you want some riffs to use in your essay, Black Sabbath riffs are they way to go.

death - spirit crusher; the chorus type part.

"The mind is its own place, and in itself

Can make a Heav'n of Hell, a Hell of Heav'n"

- John Milton, Paradise Lost

Holy Diver - Dio
Down With the Sickness - Disturbed
Unholy Confessions - A7x
Right SIde of the Bed - Atreyu (not really metal but still)

and obviously almost anything by Pantera, Metallica, Lamb of God, 5 Finger Death Punch, etc
#6
Enter Sandman - Metallica
For Whom the Bell Tolls - Metallica
Paranoid - Black Sabbath
I Don't Wanna Stop - Ozzy Osbourne
Crazy Train - Ozzy Osbourne

Those are just some of my favorites that really get me going. Metallica, Ozzy/Sabbath, etc. are good bands to look at as a starting point. I don't know if you want to count Hair Metal (Motley Crue, Bon Jovi?, Slaughter) as metal. I don't personally. But "Kickstart my Heart" by Motley Crue was always a favorite of mine. It has some cool riffs. Plus they use a Talk Box on the outro solo. Pretty cool song. Also I doubt you consider Grunge to be metal, but I like Alice in Chains.

Also, I always like to give a thanks to Hendrix for pioneering some of the distortion that is used to day. He kind of layed the pavement for the hard rock/heavy metal era.

Unholy Confessions - A7x (not really metal but still)
Right SIde of the Bed - Atreyu (not really metal but still)

and obviously almost anything by Pantera, Metallica, Lamb of God (not really metal but still), 5 Finger Death Punch (not really metal but still), etc (probably not really metal as well)

i've always found pop to be harder to play than metal... especially shred metal... it's just really fast tremolo picking and the occasional palm mute... and the only chords you have to worry about are power chords...

The point of underground bands is their not popular or famous most of the time. Thus there is a good chance they suck.
