So i keep seeing these adverts about donating to some charity so we can save a load of pandas because there's only a few left in the world.

But surely this is natural selection in progress? they're lazy animals that can't even be arsed to re-produce, AMIRITE?

Or are we being told its our fault they're dying out?

And I dont do it nicely either. I boiled a slug in highly saturated salt water and put a wasp in a microwave. I hate wasps so much.

When I'm 18 I'm going to China for a month to work in a Panda Sanctuary, I love Pandas. But I do agree they ae quite lazy, but surely it isn't just natural selection, surely it's the fact that forests are being destroyed and Pandas live in forests, right?
#7
It is at least a bit our fault.

They're the living dead now anyway. We can't save them. They don't want to reproduce. Spend money saving something else instead. I recommend marine life, we're royally messing stuff up right there.

Pandas do a lot more than loaf around and eat. They are cute and cuddly and make nice postcard pictures.

That's not really accurate, they have a tendency to not mate in captivity, they reproduce just fine in the wild (though they have a naturally low birthrate)

Nah it's our fault probably, we do suck pretty bad.
But tbh I think cancer is more important than pandas so I'd rather give my money to cancer research. Although pandas are pretty sweet.

Hmm. Thats a thinker.

I suppose it's natural selection in that they aren't adapting to us tearing down the forest.
But then again, chainsaws and bulldozers aren't really natural...

It's not really natural selection since we're destroying their habitats.

As animals ourselves, anything we do that isn't on purpose (i.e. breeding the biggest cows) is "natural selection."

It was out natural selection to destroy their habitats rather than be happy with what we had.

A few? No. A lot. Yeah it's not as bad as pandas.
But lets look at the shark finning market, for example.

Many species of sharks becoming extinct means more fish preying on fish that eat algae, or fish that eat algae directly. Less algae - less oxygen for the rest of us.

Very important.

Not according to most conservationists I've talked to, Pandas do have a fairly low birthrate, but so do other bear species, notable the black bear, which is making a substantial comeback now due to efforts made to curb habitat loss.

This commercial is simply ridiculous. It is little more than a plot to part you with your money, which will be spent on programs supporting racist enterprises like affirmative action and integration of schools, hence the panda moniker. By giving them money or even threads on UG you are only spreading the hateful racist "liberal" agenda.

Food chains, right? Learned it last year in my biology class. Make extinct the platypus and well all die of whatever eats the platypus eating us.

My Biology tutor knows his stuff though. Like to the max. He's done so many awesome things, including some things he can't even talk about.
It's partially because the panda's environment can't be sustained anymore. Bamboo being it's only food source, pandas can't find it.... so they give up. It's too far down the line.

Yeah like I said, habitat loss.. start curbing that and replanting bamboo and you'd see the population rebound, albiet fairly slowly.

Yeah but we could still be alright if they were just fished at a slower rate.

not really, current estimates put the wild population at around 3,000, they aren't even considered critical at this point.

depends on which estimates you read, the ones using more accurate techniques put it at around 3,000, one using older more unreliable methods put it at about 2,000, and yeah not all of them are protected, but it's still enough to make repopulating them viable, I've yet to meet anyone who studies conservation that thinks otherwise.

But seriously, there are more important things than pandas, even though pandas are awesome. But if they're seriously too lazy to have sex, that's just pathetic.
