I took a history test, and one of the questions had to do with the differences between baroque and classical music. None of the answers seemed right, so I circled "classical music was more structured then baroque music". I didn't think this was right, but it seemed to be the most likely answer. It was wrong.

My teacher is a pretty cool guy, so he lets us write out a reason why our answer should be considered correct if we get it wrong. I told him in class that classical music was more centered around a melody or a theme or idea, whereas baroque music had very complex chord progressions and harmonies. I know this is a load of bullshit, but could you guys help me write out a convincing test correction? Just give me some ideas or reasons to back up my claim.

P.S. I know I'm pretty cheap, but this correction will raise my quiz grade from a C to a B-

You're a grade grubber!

Seriously though, I'm the king of making up bullshit like this. Just make sure you accentuate the great pieces in Classical music and compare them to some"relatively simpler" Baroque pieces.

At least you passed the test. Be happy with that. Bring him a fruit basket and a cake and see if he changes his mind.

No. Now you get no help. Your window of opportunity is closed, and you have no one to blame but yourself.

Just write on an envelope "my answer is correct because..." and then put a 20 in it and a note that says "my friend Mr. Jackson says so."

Just make up some crap about what you would define as "structured" music.

To me, in a question like that, "structured" would mean more... solid I suppose. Think of a house built with solid, simple geometric shapes and compare it to something built from a complex weave of branches or whatever.

EDIT: Just thought of a decent example. A jazz piece can be extremely musically complex but be very unstructured at the same time if that makes sense.

Draw him a picture of a Classical composer beating up a baroque composer with his violin?

EDIT: or, play him this video

Do research, write it out yourself.
You came to the pit for info on classical music? You failed hard, sir.

The only time I would ever ask for advice in this cess pool is if I needed to know about a pointy guitar, or why putting too much treble on a guitar is cool.

Perhaps the better response would be to ask the teacher to explain why his answer was correct.

I would go for this approach, but bring backup to support that classical followed more of a structured pattern. If he can beat your response, accept your loss and move on.

Well it all really depends on what the question meant by structure and you can't really definitely say for sure because pieces within each respective period varied greatly. Some Baroque pieces had themes and some would just progress depending on the kind of piece it was, Prelude, Fugue, etc. Similarly, Classical had a similar way depending on whether it was a Rondo, a Sonata etc.

It's quite a debatable one if you ask me.

I have always learned in school that Baroque is more structured. It's comparable to much modern music in the fact that it cycles through a few sections, repeating them, while classical progresses to somewhere different. That's why classical music is much more renowned, as it is more complex because it deviated from the traditional forms that held Baroque music back.

Just talk about how less can be more, how minimalist pieces can be more emotive, etc, etc. Think of it like DragonForce vs Jimi Hendrix. I know which is more complicated but I also know which has a damn sight more feeling and emtion.
