I just formed a new band at school and we've been trying to find inspiration for a name and was wondering how other bands came to decide on a name.

Imma answer your question

You pick something and say "Hey guys lets be this, *insert band name here*" And if most everyone agrees YOU GOT YOURSELF A FINE AND DANDY NAME!

Please read in scouse accent if possible.

Well I as sitting in the rehearsal space fiddling with my acoustic guitar, George was in the corner restringing his own. Ringo was pretending to play the drums and then John just came running and said he'd got it, he then told the rest of us and we were all blown away like.

EDIT: That wasn't worth my effort.

Just pay attention to everything. I got the sweetest freaking band-name by paying attention in English class, it was a vocabulary word, someday it'll be a melodic death metal band.

The Fall of Troy :p
(They also did the same thing when they were named The Thirty Years War)

I personally just like things that sound cool. Like, for some reason I like pretty sounding words like crystal, dream, holographic, etc. So i usually try to find something that sounds badass and sorta exotic at the same time...kinky e_e

Mines odd. When me and our other guitar player started jammin, he kept saying, "dude you play so fast" then he watched the movie about the dude who broke the sound barrier, and we came up with both our band name and slogan. So, movies work
Clapton is god, accept it.

If I can offer one piece of advice. Don't necessarily make the band name be what defines you. If you call yourself "Demon Horde" you are not gonna pull off playing folk music.
We use 43 muscles to frown, 17 to smile, and 2 to pull a trigger. I'm lazy and I'm tired of smiling.

You know, now I want to start a folk band called "Demon Horde".

I always thought Sybian would be a cool name for a rock band. It sounds all foreign and mysterious when it's really just a name for a female sex toy.

They way me and my band thought of our name was the drummer was like half asleep writting lyrics and he wrote something like "stopped by the fear to fail" and he was like "hey, what do you think of Fear to Fail for our name?" and I was like "sure, why not". We were kind of desprate at the time for a name so we just rolled with that and it started to stick, so we made it our permanent name.

In the seventies my band was All in a Daze Work - bassist thought it up after a heavy party
In the eighties there was OTT from the popular saying of the time and suggested by some girl in a pub.
Then
The Plain Band after the singer's surname
So, pretty rubbish really, other than just tagging singers names which is usual in blues.
I always liked It Bites who got the name from the farmer who let them rehearse in his barn but warned about his dog. 'It bites y'know. It BITES'
Another way is to find a phrase, either 'cos you like it or by some random method then pass ut through Babelfish a few times and back into English or whatever start language.
I took Molten Death through several European languages and it came back with Death Fusion. Works best with far eastern languages.
I pick up my guitar and play
Just like Yesterday

T C Ellis Series 2 LP w/Skatterbrane Quiescence pups

All of you take a notebook and pen around with you, whenever you see anything at all which sounds catchy or good or whatever, write it down. Then meet up with your band a week or 2 later and discuss your reams of ideas.
