I am looking for an amp in the $500-800 range that has plenty of gain and balls without losing note definition. I would also like it to have a nice clean tone and have an effects loop. I was thinking of an Egnater Rebel 20, Bugera 333xl, or B52 of some sort. If you have any advice or experience with any of the amps or even another suggestion please let me know.

The bugera is based off the XXX which I have the 40 watt combo whch is amazing for metal. However plenty of gain is going to lose you note definition no matter what you do. But it has asstons of gain though.

Are they good enough for maybe jazz or 311 type of cleans?

I'm not sure what 311 is, but it can do jazz fine imo.

Tube or solid state? Bugeras are alright, I've seen one blow up when turned up to 10. Vox Valvetronix range are good, they're mid-priced hybrids with a valve pre-amp. They are modelling amps so something will sound good on it for metal for sure.

I'd prefer a tube amp actually.

Is it loud enough to play with a drummer and does it sound good at lower volumes?

I liked the egnater alot too. I didn't have too much time to test but I love the watt selecting. Is the egnater able to keep up with drums with the matched 112 cab or should I go with something else? Also is the Egnater able to do metal?

it can get pretty good distortion/overdrive. i didnt turn the gain all the way but it sounded like it could. the one thing i liked about it was the tube mix. its a cool little effect egnater does. and yes it should be able to overpower a drummer

EDIT: are you talking about for gigs where you and the drummer are miced up or for just jamming?

The only thing you liked was the tube mix? If it is not able to able to get into metal territory could I just boost it with an o/d pedal? I am talking about jamming and gigging mic'd and un mic'd.

^its not the only thing. its just ONE thing of the many aspects of the rebel 20

yeah you could over power a drummer. you could boost it with a pedal if you wanted.
