Hey guys,

I just bought an amp off someone on craigslists yesterday for what i thought was a pretty good deal
it was a Carvin MTS-3212 and I got it for $230.
However, I was in for a surprise. When I went to go check it out, I checked the back and the front and I couldn't see anything wrong with it but when it looked at it again this morning, some termites had come out from the head part of the combo where I couldn't see it anyways. The only thing I guess I can do take out the chassis out of the combo and kill all of them but i don't have a clue on how to do that.

It would be great if you guys can help me kill this termite problem as quick as possible.

Thanks,
-Andy

also a warning on buying on craigslist: watch out!

The chassis is usually held in place by screws that are easily visible on the outside of the cabinet. Sometimes they are the screws that hold the handle on. Make sure it is unplugged and don't touch anything in there. You could get the piss shocked out of you even when it is unplugged. Keep in mind that the big magnet on the speaker can pull the chassis towards it when you get it loose. The magnetic force can cause the chassis to slam into the speaker. Be careful

is there another way you would suggest to approach this problem besides juts tossing the amp?

I dunno if it works for termites, but bug bombing the amp might work. However, it might have adverse effects on the electronics.

1. Remove the chassis like Adam said.
2. Remove the speaker.
3. Discard the wooden part that the termites are in.
4. Build or buy a new cabinet to put the speaker and chassis in.
5. ??????
6. Profit!!!

I had a customer bring me an XBox for repair that they said wasn't working. As soon as I opened it, 3 or 4 cockroaches came running out and took off into my shop. My house was above my shop at the time. Needless to say in 3 weeks I had to call an exterminator and have poison put down for them because they set in that short period of time.

Termites are social animals that generally form large colonies in sizeable nests though there are probably 4000 species so this won't be true of all the species. Only the winged members of the colony can breed so unless you have hundreds in there including at least one king and one queen your house should be safe. You probably only have a few foraging workers there. Are you sure they are termites?

They feed on dead plant material and the wood of the cabinet will be top nosh for them. Take the amp and speaker out, check for invaders in these and brush them out with a soft brush and dispose of them. Then treat the cabinet with an insecticidal 5 star wood treatment which will soak in and kill any insect life and protect the wood in future. If you are not happy doing this take the empty cabinet along to a company that specialises in timber treatment in homes and ask them to spray it for you.

Keep watching. Read my story above. A couple of coachroaches is enough to infect your whole house in a matter of a few weeks. Made $30 off fixing the XBox and paid $200 to get rid of the roaches.
