Ok, I need the Pit's help...

I've always liked the look of the church organ (the BIG 4-tiered ones with the 36 pedals and little twiddly buttons).

Only problem: there's no teachers around here and nearly all the classes, scholarships and courses are for existing players.

Does anyone have any idea how I might be able to learn to play one? I'm desperate to see what a Rush song would sound like on one....

google?
I can honestly say I have really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like.

I don't always post on UG, but when I do, I post in the Pit. Stay thirsty my friends.

Ever seen how one of these things is played? You have to be able to read anything up to FOUR staves, all in the meantime whilst you have to do two seperate things with your hands and two different things with your feet.

In other words, they're semi-IMPOSSIBLE to play.

Call up some local churches and see if they have an organ player who will give you lessons/if they will let you use theirs for said lessons. I'm sure there will be at least one who will be more than willing to do so on both accounts.

most organ music isn't that bad for a competent keyboardist TBH, practice on a normal keyboard and research how to use the stops and whatnot, you might be able to find an electric organ real cheap (at least they're easy to find here) to learn the basics of using the pedals.

Key mash for a half hour then give up and never play again. Or find someone who knows how to play and pay them.

Best suggestion.

Also, what an incredibly useless instrument to learn, unless you are planning on being a church organist...

ask said teachers for classes...

seriously music teachers are really cool and will often go out of their way to help the youth. not all of them but you're bound to find one. and +1 to the keyboard idea: learn how to read music fluently in bass and treble and alto or whatever the organ uses.

I meant the ambient part with the organ in it. But the intro is good too.

If you're having problems finding a church organ player to teach you just tell them you're an 11 year old boy who sometimes has memory problems.

Just get yourself an electro harmonix cathedral reverb pedal, and then one those HOG pedals, and you're golden. You won't have to learn to play the organ.

It's pretty self explanatory if you can already play piano, just a lot to take in. I've played a church organ a couple of times, you're in control of a massive sound and it feels good.

Well don't YOU think a song like Subdivisions or Force Ten (played on an electric organ anyway) wouldn't sound awesome on a church organ?

I have a friend in university studying organ and from what I've heard theres almost no point in playing organ until you are really really good at piano. And then the only way to properly learn organ is with a good teacher. So "organ for dummies" isn't a very good idea.
