Apparently, reciting one number a second, it would take 49,000 years to say aloud!

Jesus!

Okay, so maybe this isn't the most interesting topic to some of you, so I'll open it up to other fascinating science/math based records!

auto-incorrect. There is no rounding with pi. Pi doesn't accept rounding.

Just imagine how accurately we could work things out if we had the exact value of pi.

Although most scientists agree we only need it to a certain number of digits to get pretty accurate. I read that 39 digits was accurate enough to work out the "circumference" of the universe to within the width of a hydrogen atom.

Probably bullshit though.

This is not necessary, my friend. I don't understand how it would end, because it accounts for a perfect circle. Anyone able to explain this?

It doesn't end, they do this pretty much as an intellectual excercise.

I guess they could also use it to refine formulae and other aspects of maths though?

There is no end to pi, but the larger the distances you work with, the greater the innaccuracy introduced by rounding pi. So it may be useful for, say, astromomers, who do wrok with mind-bogglingly large distances.

Yeah, but the guy up there^^ said that 39 is good enough. He could just be bullshitting though.

That's all you really need to know to do basic things that 99% or more of the general population uses it for. For astronomers etc. who use it with other massive values, it'd make a pretty noticeable difference between that and using just a hundred decimal places.

It could well be, I suppose. I mean, 39 digits is rather a lot.
But accuracy for accuracy's sake isn't a bad thing.

Has anyone heard the After The Burial song Pi (The Mercury God of Infinite)?

Instead of going to 71 decimal points, they should go to 2.7 trillion.

Good idea, if they want to beat Dream Theater for song length.

Copied that from the Facebook group then?

9:26:54 would be more correct actually. But then again the real math geeks would also take fractions of seconds into account. And jizz in their pants at exactly that moment.

It's an entirely pointless exercise calculating pi to more than ~50 d.p. the errors on any other measurement you make when using pi in calculations will be factors of millions more than the error in pi at 50d.p. and in pure maths you just write it as pi, not as 3.141592653589793...

If people were attemping to do something with it for some encryption system or spotting patterns within the digits i would understand, but as it is they're not, making the whole exercise quite pointless... just like trying to play 100nps on guitar
