I spent a year confessing secrets
To fortune tellers and to mystics
I said "lay your truth at my feet
Unlock those ancient pyramids".
There are merchants in the valley
Where shaman do tricks for money
Could never make an honest girl of you
Or an honest man of me.
The scent of incense and tobacco
Makes times wheels roll slow
Well that was then
And this is now.

We both wanted all, not second best
We just always seemed to make an honest mess
And with a great success I must confess
And now Ruby is taking off her dress.
I dream that there's a Phoenix in the fire
As Ruby fades into night,
You are old now, you are disappearing
Into the smoke of my mind.
Gypsy hymns make string lights sway
Am I here or am I there?
Well that was then
And this is now.

There are riders out in the plains
And there are ships upon the waves
If who I am, is who I were
Then what part did I play?
Did you ever find your fortune,
Which one of us would talk about that?
I heard Jonny struck gold somewhere out west
Whilst we borrowed to settle debts
It's has this close up, distant feeling
Like a film or something less real
Well that was then
And this is now.

It always looks real pretty
Until it is under a microscope
Then you see the devil wearing details
Like an emperor in his clothes.
Sat outside of Jesse's store-front
Playing with dice in the mud
I'm probably drunk or a stranger
But I still have angelic blood.
If it's on your mind then let me know
Because it might be on mine too
That was then
And this is now.

Do you see the desert when you close your eyes?
In all that heat I think the well must've run dry
I wrote this letter because you never left my mind
And that is what keeps me coming back every night.

That was then
And this is now. <-- Lose it, everywhere

For the most part this was pretty well pulled off. A few of the rhymes felt like a punch in the face (second stanza especially), but a good deal of them worked pretty well.

There are riders out in the plains
And there are ships upon the waves
If who I am, is who I were
Then what part did I play? <-- Hated this part here

Did you ever find your fortune <-- Loved that

All in all, pretty sweet read
