Really just two questions....what do they do and why are they so popular?

Talking to another dude about advancing my recording set-up a bit, and he advised that I get a tubescreamer for my head (Spider Valve MkII). Seems like everyone shits bricks over these things. Any reason?

A TS is a very mid heavy OD, generally used more as a boost than an actual OD. Running a boost into your spider is going to sound TERRIBLE, though. (I've heard it.)

An overdrive pedal which is nowadays often used as a booster. At least, I use it to boost my amp...

Eh, Spider Valve has built in boost, so no real need for it I suppose. I'll try it out but yeaahhh, probably not necessary. Problem solved, thanks.
