A while back(quite a long while back actually) someone in the Epic Doodles Thread suggested that an art tutorials thread would be nice in the Pit. Well, such a thing really never came into fruition.

So here we go!

Post your own tutorials/tips/tricks for things like drawing/sketching/painting/digital art/etc. I don't want links to outside resources. This is for YOU to contribute YOUR knowledge to the UG Community.

This thread can also be used for questions. Don't be afraid to ask for tips and help.

I'll post my own when I have time to put them together.

Individual posts will be linked here.

Do you have any advice on drawing in proportion, apart from the obvious load of practice involved? I focus too much on one part, and in the final product it's out of proportion to the rest of the picture (like tanks with abnormally huge turrets. What were you thinking?).

Great thread idea, btw

Sometimes it's good to lay everything out first.

Make a blot of the body, head, and turret, then refine it.

It's similar to the whole "+" for the face thing.

Similiar to what Momentosis said, I sketch the whole body really vaguely and lightly with many strokes, so that I can take a step back and check the proportions before I go into detail. For example, drawing a human would start like this (my sketches are usually much more sloppy and with more scribbled lines before I choose which line is the most proportional):

You don't even need to go into that much detail, a simple oval for the head and arms without the joints drawn in would work. Erase, redraw, erase, redraw until you're pleased with the shape and figure. Then, you can press harder and start drawing the details now that you know where everything's gonna go, erasing the light outline as you go (or not, some great artists like Da Vinci left the stray lines in the final product). It should work with any other object too.

I think you'd pretty much have to do this manually with the eraser/smudge/blend tools.

If someone knows a better way then... go ahead and tell us.

I'm not quite sure what you mean there.

I mainly am interested in animation stuff but I do other things like painting and just random drawing stuff. I browse 2d artists blogs a lot and these are the best handouts that I've seen. If anyone is interested in animation I will gladly post a few but for now I'll just leave these here. Hope they help others as much as they help me.

Whoah, Large Image!

Put this together quickly in about 15 minutes.

I don't know what one would call it but I call it a subtractive BnW work(specifically a character).

I like to use a really fine brush, have only a little bit of paint left on it, and really push it onto the canvas pushing the bristles out in funny directions. You can get a great hazy glowy effect.

That's my tip.

What I do is I draw a grid and allot a certain amount of space for one part, I try to make the spaces equal depending on what I need to draw. Also, since I draw in pen I don't usually draw a grid on the same page I do the drawing on.

Mask tool.

If you erase something, you can't get it back without the undo function. With a mask, all you have to do is paint white to make it come back. In some cases you can take the image you're cutting out and copy it to the mask and make level adjustments and that's all you need to do.

Holy crap. This is exactly what I need. I want to try to get fairly decent at drawing over summer break. I need advice on pretty much every aspect of drawing. I'm mostly interested in using pencil and paper as my medium, and need to know all the basics. [stickied]

I just like the idea of drawing dragons, some kickass dragons. I've tried in past but it always lacks

Any tips would be great for this, nice thread btw.

That's it? Twenty-two posts and this thread has succumbed to the hairy bowels of the Pit? This cannot be, I will not let this happen!

More like 17 posts before it died and then died again after 22 posts.

And then died again.

And for dragons, just practice drawing lizards.

Don't worry if you're not achieving what you were originally inspired to do. Let the thing evolve as you're doing it, and keep adding bits and improving it until you genuinely can't make it any better, regardless of whether it's good in the way you originally intended it to be.

I once tried to do a realistic landscape, but I fucked the proportion so I made it into a distorted messed-up surreal one. One realistic portrait of Mikael Akerfeldt turned into an expressionistish portrait in weird colours. Both were better than what I originally had in my head.

I'm not very good at technical tips, but I wanted to bump the thread so that'll have to do.

Sorry in advance for the size...
