So as I'm sitting here watching the Simpsons 20th anniversary special, it occurs to me that there may not be a single person on the planet who hasn't heard of the Simpsons.

So it got me to thinking, is there anything or anyone else that is on the same level of well-known?

The only other thing I could think of is Mario. Everyone knows who Mario is.

There are still people living in primitive tribes in jungles, communicating in clicks and whistles and shit. I doubt they've heard of ANYTHING mentioned in this thread.

That would've been way too obvious. I like to keep you people on your toes.

Well obviously. The concept of God is probably the only thing mentioned in this thread that really qualifies.

Tribesman: You there! Where have the livestock gone? Respond to me in the third person immediately!
Ox Herder: The herder of this village's oxen detests these irking jabs beset by the local buffoon. At times he grows weary but is simply not aware of it. Such is his existence.
Tribesman: What a daft remark! If only the tribesman could experience it personally... *walks off towards plains*

Ox Herder (staring to the sky): He knows, somewhere in his heart, he knows... that perhaps other tribes of people coexist beyond the boundaries of his life. In their spare time, they gather together to observe a luminous box that projects images of a miniature yellow family and their daily happenings. The entire tribe erupts with laughter whenever he speaks of such matters, but he knows... somehow, he knows...

David Beckham was more widely recognised in Japan than Jesus in a recent survey.

Not too surprising considering the small percentage of Christians in Japan. Soccer (deal with my American terms) is pretty popular in Japan.

I think The Beatles are pretty widely known. There aren't a lot of places you could go that nobody has heard of the Beatles. Obviously places like the middle of the Amazon would be an exception, but in most places at least one person would probably have heard of them.

Elvis?

Also, David Beckham is a popular guy to be sure but I wouldn't say he is universally reknowned. While I know who he is, none of his matches are broadcasted on primetime tv or anything like that (instead they're on a slightly obscure foreign channel at odd timeslots). The only really well known associations I can think of is the sharpie ad he was in and his marriage to Posh Spice. Not meaning to argue with OP merely pointing out how people often lose perspective of how unknown commercial icons are outside of their own country.

Apparently it's possible now to get a degree in the Simpsons, so it must be pretty well known...I don't really know what kind of job that could possibly get you though..
