i've never heard the other two depictions aside from high gain. i guess low gain b/c that'd be what SRV would fall under in your requirements

Hi-Gain is just another way of saying, "HEAVY ****ING METAL!@!@!"

Mid-Gain is just another way to say, "Lets play some ****ing rock!@!!"

Low-Gain is just another way of saying, "I love to play soft solos, but still have distortion"

IMO, the best high-gain tones have a lot less gain than people think. Example: Brown Sound. You have no idea how many people will try to play Van Halen stuff with the gain cranked, when Eddie's tone really had not much gain at all (compared to modern hard rock/metal), but still SOUNDED like it had a lot. I don't use THAT little gain, but not TOO much more. The gain on my main rhythm channel is at about 9 o'clock or 9:30, and the the gain on my secondary channel is at about 10-10:30.
So for me, even though I play heavy metal, I use a lot less gain than most of my peers, but even so people will come to me after shows and say they liked my tone better than their own. I just go 'turn the gain down a lot and push the mids a bit more' and they're baffled.
