I have a blackheart bh5h and it has a little too much headroom. If i swapped out the tubes could that make it more distortable? If so what tubes should i use?
#2
not really since it's probably running 12ax7s already.
You could get more headroom but you can't get less with tubes. Unless the problem is that the tube in there is off spec and has low gain. Try a jj ecc83s. they consistently have pretty high gain.

probably not. the el84 isnt interchangable with other tubes and the 12ax7 in the preamp is the highest gain tube thats compatible. most good manufacturers have a rating system for their power tubes that rates how quickly they break up with volume. "soft" tubes will break up earlier on and have a smoother transition from clean to crunch to saturation but its effects the feel of the amp mostly and not the overall distortion capabilities.

you might try a jjecc83s and a groove tubes 1 rating el84

It might help if you described why you feel it has too much headroom.

I, for one, am baffled.
Everyone is entitled to an opinion.

Feel free to express yours so I can make an informed judgement about how stupid you are.

What do you mean too much headroom?

Do you think it doesn't have enough gain for metal or do you want more looseness for a classic rock sound?

If the former, less headroom isn't going to solve your problem. If the latter, there's not much you can do except try less efficient speakers and a power tube rated for earlier breakup.
