When you started singing, how did you find your singing voice? I'm starting out singing, but whenever I do I feel like I am just trying to mimic the artist in the song rather than use "my" voice.

I hope you get that...

Write your own songs so there's nothing to imitate

This man that's all I can say. I started writing songs at the beginning of last summer and found my style and I've written quite a few songs now. I think you will be a lot more creative if you are not trying to imitate songs but creating your own.

As you progress as a musician your voice will naturally come to you.
Also the genre of music will have influence on that factor.

sing the song over a backing track or your own arrangment on guitar or whatever. usually if i sing over the original track, i tend to try and sound like the singer. but if the vocals are gone or im playing guitar and singing, im forced to more or less sound like me.
