Well Pit, I came across an extremely interesting article on the bbc news site, here.

SENS is basically a research project to find ways to combat ageing. I'm not talking about fighting off wrinkles and gray hairs. These guys want to extend the average lifespan enormously (see title). And for all those years you would retain youthfulness, you would stay at whatever age you chose. EDIT: i.e. you would not be a fragile old cripple, you would be like you were 21, perfectly healthy, physically able etc.

My question, Pit: If this therapy was available and working in your lifetime (the Dr. in the article thinks it could be possible within 20 years) would you take it? Would you extend your life past when it was meant to end "naturally"?

This raises so many questions - Are we playing God? How could the planet cope in terms of food supply and space? Would this prompt reproduction laws like China's? etc.

I know I would. But for how long, I'm not sure. Probably until I got bored I suppose

Poll coming.

I don't want to live to be 1000.

I'm going to get bored with life way before I'm a thousand years old.

I thought after a while, the atoms which make you actually fall apart?

So no, the idea of fading away into nothing whilst concious is pretty terrifying,

and i imagine i would probably ge bored and end up killing myself by accident doing something stupid.

Yeah, why not? Sure would suck to see people die over the centuries but there's so much I'd want to see.

As boring as living to 1000 be, it would be even more boring to be dead for 1000 years, so I like to live forever please.

I'd rather die a natural death than be hit by a lorry to be honest.

I'm going to predict severe overpopulation unless they put a massive price tag on this sort of thing.

Or mandatory sterilization if you accept the treatment.

Which I wouldn't mind, assuming I had already had children.

The atoms you are made of now are not the same for the rest of your life. We are constantly being recycled, so there technically no necessity for deterioration and death of the body.

I'd totally take it, you only live once, it may as well be long and interesting! Plus so much would happen in 1000 years!

You know the western world is not in any real overpopulation danger. I highly doubt they would have this in developing nations. But yeah I probably would do this, probably not for a thousand years but maybe a couple hundred. Also this is not playing god, playing god is creating new life artificially not naturally. If you call this playing god than that is like saying using antibiotics is playing god

Yeah that makes sense. It would be one hell of a decision if they made that the case.

It would be if this was made available. Imagine the death rates plummeting, yet the birth rates remaining at around the same level. All those people just adding up, the population constantly expanding. Wouldn't be too long before the country is under serious pressure to supply water, food, land etc. that it doesn't have.

I think this could be called playing god. You'd be interfering with the natural process of ageing and death, and stopping it for an unnatural amount of time.

If I did do this, I'd probably become a full-time researcher. I think it would be amazing to be able to study and work on something, and constantly improve and discover new things related to it for such a long period of time.
#22
Hell no, that's disgusting. I dearly hope that the technology to do that never becomes available, or else humanity will swiftly die out.
kill all humans

It would only be under my own conditions. I don't want anybody else living to 1,000. Only me. If everyone lived to 1,000 we'd be in some deep shit. Even if I could live to 1,000 that doesn't mean I won't ever get shot or get into some accident. Even if this, my chances of dying would only be higher because the longer I'd be around the more likely I'd be in some kind of car accident or maybe I'd get cancer or something. I don't think no matter how far technology gets that anyone will live that long comfortably. I would REALLY like to see how far we really do get as a society in the next 1,000 years though. There are so many questions that might be answered like is there a God, how big is the universe, will people lives on Mars, is there life in space, where did we really come from, was there really a Jesus Christ, will we be succesfully able to clone humans, I mean the possibilities are endless. Just think of how far we have come in the past 1,000 years. It's a nice thought to think you're immortal but really we all have to die sooner or later no matter what scientists give us.
#24
Wait so how are they trying to do this? Like Nano-machines in your blood stream that constantly repair damage or something?
#25
I wouldn't mind staying young until I died. That would be a blast.

And I'd probably want to live to 100-150.

Even still, what if you got in a car accident or got stabbed in the heart? This machine thing wouldn't do shit then you'd still be dead.

Don't think it would be anything like that. After some light reading on the theroetical treatment process, it seems it would be done through the use of drugs and a little genetic engineering to move some parts of your cells to another part of the same cells, to give them increased protection from mutations etc.

EDIT:

Yes they wouldn't be of much use but the rate of early deaths due to stuff like this is low compared to naturally caused deaths. There's a part of the news article in the OP that deals with that. I think he said something like people would have a 50/50 chance of passing 1,000 years of age.

Would this treatment slow mental degradation as well? If not then I can't imagine it being particularly viable past 100 or so.

From what it sounds like, this would prevent your brain cells from dying. But now that people know about it, who would want it to happen. If one person does this then other people will figure out and of course almost everyone would like to live to 1,000 and shit would go down really bad really quickly. I hope if scientists do figure out how to make this work, they don't put it in the news and don't tell ANYONE except maybe just one or two test subjects then dispose of the research.

I did and ok maybe I went a little off topic. I'll answer the questions. HELL NO do I ever want this shit to happen because the chinese population would be like 999 trillion and there would be no place to even go to the bathroom. And as far as the God thing, I am an atheist so that's not the problem it's just there are way too many ****ing peopel on this piece of shit we call Earth and if we get anymore I'm commiting suicide.
