Seems pretty random, but I'm curious: What would happen if you filed the guitar strings? Has anybody done this?

My guess would be that they would be a little brighter, without that extra string on it. But, would it change the sound/tone of your guitar?

you'd probably just break them.

Sorry, I meant more the EAD strings, not the higher ones. And I don't plan on doing it. I'm just curious if it has ever ben tried before.

if you file your strings... your going to break them..

so ti will change your sound..

it will go 'twang'

then your guitar will make NO sound at all.

Anyways, threadstarter, do you mean removing the windings on the lower strings, leaving just the core?

To be honest, I'm not really sure why I want to know, but the thought just sort of came into my head while watching my girlfriend file her nails while I was playing guitar.

Can't say for sure, but if you can find some beefy plain strings, you could string an instrument up like that? Though I'm not sure how much (if any) extra tension you'll be adding to the guitar.

I don't think it would sound very nice either...

I file my strings all the time. It will give you a chunky tone. I think Eddie Van Halen used this method to achieve his brown sound.

um...that would be like putting the high strings on the low end. you realize a .52 guage string starts out with i think a .13 core. so the core is a .13 string.

Tony Iommi used filed down strings to make it easier for his wax fingertips to grasp the string without damaging the tips like regular strings would.

Didn't Tony Iommi used banjo strings ?

I put welding wire on once. It was interesting.
What did it sound like? I put gardening wire on mine once but it was too soft and stretchy so it broke.

As to OP, just buy ground wounds, they sound a little duller than normal strings but they aren't as bad as flat wounds.
