Since the topic in The Pit got closed for reasons I'm unsure of since I've asked dumber things in The Pit and gotten dozens of posts...

Asking in individual threads gets me nowhere, and I get a feeling that, since most artists threads are "ohmygodtheseguysaresoooperfectineverymusicalway" fangushing, the BTBAM thread would be useless.

What exactly is the big deal about Between The Buried And Me? They're a good band, but people are acting like they're the second coming of Christ lately, they're not that good. They're good, but not this sort of godly state I've seen a lot of people elevate them to around here.

I'm not trying to detract from them, I'm just trying to understand when and why they suddenly became UG's favourite band.

They're not so horribly overrated that it's unbearable, but yeah, I can think of dozens of better progressive metal bands.

They're still a great band, though, don't get me wrong. They're starting to turn into Dream Theater, though... they've stopped caring about the line between fun cheesy and bad cheesy.
Q: Favourite Pink Floyd song?
A: The one where they get wicked high and play Emin and A for an hour.

Yeah, they're a little too progressive for me too... (by the way, be careful... the people who are big into the BTBAM thread probably will read this too, PREPARE TO BE DISAGREED WITH... just play it cool )

Warning: The below consists of my own opinion and may anger many people:

Since this is a guitar website, I'm sure most UGer's like them because of their guitar and bass work, this is very good. They make a good use of large streches, weird chord shapes, and odd time signatures that make their songs very difficult to play on any instrument. The drummer is pretty good, and they incorporate many genres into their songs, making them a pretty unpredictable band.

Sigh.

And by unpredicatble, I mean really-****ing-dictable. Their vocalist's cleans are, for the most part, whiny. The odd time signatures get really repetitive and once you get used to it, you can almost foresee when and where the next change will be. You will almost always get some kind of jazz interlude (cue whiny vocals).

^ I may be exaggerating.

I like them as a band. I've tried playing the White Walls solo and it's pretty difficult. The screams get on my nerves, but they seem like a hardworking band nevertheless. And BTBAM isn't the only thing UG is a fanboy of. EVERYbody loves Opeth, Porcupine Tree, Tool, etc...

whatever, i have a fever so none of that probably made sense. who gives a shit.
R.I.P. Ronnie James Dio. Supplied amazing music to both me and my mother.

He will be missed.

Do you know why BTBAM is talked about so often? It's because BTBAM is always relevant. Always.

Anyways, I'm awaiting GodofCheescake's arrival.

If you want a nice, hearty helping of BTBAM discussion take it to the designated thread. This thread isn't needed.

EDIT: And yes, he will eat this up. So, I'll just chill here and wait.

I just want to point out that there's a difference between "complex" and "progressive".

I wouldn't consider BTBAM to be overly "progressive". Maybe just a bit. Not all prog has to be complex as shit though.

Threads like this pop up all the time. Some band gets any sort of popularity and someone who doesn't like them does this big rant about how overrated they are and how people are stupid for being in love with a band. And they ALWAYS seem to start a new thread on it and bitch about how their argument wouldn't get anywhere in the designated thread. You know why? Because no one cares about these stupid opinions. Some lonely inter-nerd who agrees with you will be all over this shit, covering your back, but the fact remains: some people will always call bands they don't like overrated. I think bands are overrated, I don't start retarded threads on it.

Seriously, deal with it. It doesn't matter.

Oh I know, I guess it would sound better if I said there isn't always enough structure for me. I like their songs, but I just can't sit there and listen to them for an extended period of time because my stomach starts turning with all the direction changes in the music.

...I don't see why having a different opinion makes it less valid. I'm sure I like bands you don't or think are overrated, and vice versa. Doesn't mean my opinion is more right or wrong, and the same goes for your own, I don't see what makes it so stupid.

I still don't understand how a thread that is made in an attempt to understand something is retarded.

You started a retarded thread when there's already a thread (that you even acknowledged) on the subject.

I actually really like Btbam. I used to think they were only alright but once I started listening to The Great Misdirect and Colors all the way through I really started to feel the full experience and I started liking them a lot. Those two albums are definitely a lot better when listened to all the way through. I can see why people dont like them though, the vocal style is different from stuff I have heard. There is no way you can doubt the skill of the whole band though, the drums are very, very good, and same with guitars and bass. Colors really is an amazing album to listen to all the way through.
#28
Ever heard the vocals on their own, without band accompaniment?

There's a clip on the bonus DVD of The Great Misdirect with Tommy's harsh vocals.

They sound so weak and unamazing without the music. And to be honest, they're not my cup of tea with the music either.

That's pretty much my only real problem with the band.

It's kind of all but said when you say that the thread is retarded and that the only person who won't outright disagree is "some lonely inter-nerd".

You started a retarded thread when there's already a thread (that you even acknowledged) on the subject.

I still don't see how it's retarded. And yes, there's a BTBAM thread. But show me one artist thread that isn't "Hey man I like these guys." "Me too!" "Seriously?" "Yeah, saw them live last year!" "Awesome!" "Yeah, they did a great show!" "Wouldn't expect any less from the guys who gave us *Band's greatest instrumental feat here*!" That's not really the kind of thing that's conductive to "This is a good band, let's find out what particularly people think is so godly about them".
