When people say "punk sucks" and other people say "no you just gotta listen to (some band that has been disbanded for a decade)" chances are the genre is dead.
Check out my band Disturbed

Underground poseurs of today have nothing to do with the Punk movement of the mid-late 70's. Zero.

Similiarly, the Jonas Brothers have nothing to do with the 60's Pop explosion.

Emulation is not authenication.

^ true that may be, but they still are influenced by it

there are tons of bands with punk influence, just look at four year strong, even the gaslight anthem. but old fashioned punk like the ramones and stuff, it's all gone.

it's like what happened to disco. it's dead, but that's where trance and house music came from

Punk died an early death in late '79.

Everything after that is called 'Poseur'.....

Exactly,....it all evolved into something with just token similiarities to it's predecessor, and pretty much devoid of it's original significance.

Some of these got it right. Sorry poseurs!

Kind of like artificially 'road worn' guitars.

Punk is very much alive. I feel that I am qualified to say this as I have the United States equivalent of a master's degree in musicology.

After all, just look at the empirical evidence: today, bands such as Gallows and Ghost of a Thousand are breaking ground in a very original and culturally relevant way.

lame pun not intended.

punk isn't dead really, its just eveolved into other forms, most of which suck. But there are some newer bands that are still pretty punk. Plenty of things are happening in the world to be pissed about, so hopefully punk will return to form a bit.
Like punk the way it used to be? Deranged Youth Its like what Warped Tour should be!

Want to hear something mind-blowing? Pit O' Bodies Its like an amateur hypnotist plus the Spanish Inquisition!

It seems like the warm weather always brings the idiots out.
If only summer rain would fall, on the houses and the boulevards
And the sidewalk bagatelles, it's like a dream
With the roar of cars and the lulling of the cafe bars,
The sweetly sleeping sweeping of the Seine...
