I was wondering instead of tuning the E string to d could you just replace the whole E string with a d string. I prefer more bend in my string and drop d tuning always tightens up the strings and messes with my overall string tension.

If what I think is correct, then you are tuning your string UP to D

That's not what drop d is. In drop D, you tune the low e DOWN to d, not up (down tuning decreases tension). I may have totally misunderstood what you said, but that's what I read.
