Rush's Subdivisions that is...! I'm working on a violin version of this song and it's driving me mad.

Also, can someone tell me the notes of the synth intro?

lucky for you i love that song. it's in H-moll. oh, wait, english. B minor.

the notes of the synth in the intro are C# and A# (comprising an F# major chord).
Anfangen ist leicht, Beharren eine Kunst.

transcription of intro synth part for guitar:

-9--------------9-------------
-9------11------9------11-----
--------11----------10-11-----
-11-----11------11-----11-----
------------------------------

------------------------------
-7------5-------7--10--5------
-7------6-------7------6------
-9------7-------9------7------

Basic chords would be

C#/F# F# C#/F# F#
Bm A Bm A

The interesting thing about this song as far as the progression and chords is the first few bars in F# (and the same few bars during the verses). It feels like the tonal center is more F# major then Bm, probably because of the C# major chord -- in the key of Bm that C# would "normally" be minor or diminished, not major.

So if you were soloing over that C# - F# progression, you might want to use F# major scale, or chord-type licks or double-stops in F# major. Using a B minor scale might sound a little "off". B harmonic minor might sound a little better, since it has an A# instead of an A natural, wouldn't clash with the F# major chord as much.

But the rest of the song is definitely key of Bm, as is the guitar solo.
