I heard from a friend that running a tube head direct out with no load, is bad for it. He also said that it won't hurt a solid state amp head. Is this true?

I suspect that running a tube amplifier without a speaker cabinet connected - even if one runs a Direct Out - will fry the amp. Solid State amplifiers do not suffer from this problem.

Yes, that is true. Though I believe there are a few tube amps that do not require a load.
