Hey guys, new bassist here.

I'm primarily a guitarist, I just dabble in bass, if you would. I just joined a band playing bass and I'm looking to get an amp. To my understanding, I'm currently running through an EQ pedal into a 4x10 (I'm not sound system savvy at all, forgive my ignorance.)

Bottom line is that I've got a 4x10 and I'm looking for a head. However, I've always heard great things, and have been curious about the tech 21 sansamp pedals. I know that there are pedals in the series made specifically for the bass, but I know some others can be used to sound good on a bass. I'd like to buy one that could be used for both guitar and bass, just for the versatility.

I know of the Bass Driver and the VT Bass in the character series, but what about the Sansamp Tri-AC? It sounds pretty good in the clips. I'd just like to know if anyone has played bass through a sansamp designed for guitar.

tl;dr: Want to buy a Tech 21 Sansamp designed for the guitar, but I want it to sound good on bass (2 birds, 1 stone). Wondering if anyone has any feedback.

Thanks in advance!

wait....your post is a bit unclear. what about the head? are you planning on buying one or just a sansamp? because a sansamp pedal isn't a power amp.

anyways, i don't know about the guitar sansamp but my bass sansamp sounds great. i run it through my rack as an EQ/boost and it completely changes the sound. HUGE difference. the bass version sounds okay on my guitar but most of its frequency range controls dont apply to guitar frequencies. In your case i think it'd be better to buy the guitar version and then maybe get a bass boost pedal that you could use with the guitar sansamp on your bass.

I dont know if you know this or not, but you need more than a preamp. You need a poweramp to deliver the right amount of power to your cab. you can get one and pair it with a sansamp to make a custom amp head. I guess any sansamp will be fine, but the ones that arent made for bass will probably cut out some of the low end.

Sorry if I wasn't clear enough. I'm debating a head or a sansamp. I think what I'm doing right now (a lot of this equipment belongs to the band that I just joined) is running through an EQ into a power amp. That would make sense, correct?

So somewhat related to this, What does the Sans Amp bass driver do?

Everyone seems to have one, but I'm not exactly sure what they do..

I'm not sure what you're saying here, you're going from an EQ to a power amp which is then running into a single 4x10?

Hahaha, maybe I should have refined my question. It's a boost box, and eq, but can I run it clean? or does it always run distortion? If I get one, it will be running to my head, and I like a clean channel...

Yes, you can run it clean. That's one of the best things about the BDDI, you can run it clean so it functions like a boost pedal to give your tone a bit of 'hmph' or go to full on distortion.

If you can spend the extra cash, get the rackmount SansAmp RBI or RPM. They give you more tonal variation. I recently picked up an RPM and while I still have a lot to learn about its capabilities, the thing is thus far amazing.

the sansamp is great if you like a little grit to your bass tone. it helps me get a sound very close to justin chancellor of tool.

Tech 21 Sansamp is a worthy investment. A LOT of tone options. I've played many shows using it as a DI box and to put a little stank on the bass. Now it collects dust as I use different gear. But you should definitley get it!
